It's the place every religion describes or refers to in their doctrines; it's the place nearly everyone believes he or she is going there; and everyone agrees it's the most wonderful place or experience we could ever imagine.
However, only one Book, the Bible, describes it in some of the following ways:
- Heaven is the dwelling place of God, the Creator of the universe. He is holy, loving, and perfectly righteous. He has always existed (which is hard to wrap our minds around); He is made up of three distinct persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, but is only one God (which is also hard to grasp, too!). No one is greater than He is. He is without beginning, without end, and nothing exists without Him. (Though our minds cannot comprehend many of these attributes, would we really expect anything less from a supreme, infinite Being? Should we, in our limited, finite minds, expect completely understand and fully grasp a God who is transcends space and time, especially when we can't even totally comprehend a universe that has billions of stars in just one galaxy that exists among billions of other galaxies? Mind-blowing!)
- Heaven is perfect, not just in its supremely beautiful details; but perfect in the sense that nothing remotely wrong, errant, or evil can exist, even for a millisecond, there. It is flawless in every way -- always has been and forever will be! We've never encountered anything around us so purely pristine and without some flaw.
- Humans do not know where heaven is located, but the Bible indicates that it's likely in another dimension that cannot be discovered by human effort.
- Heaven is the place where the final judgment of all men and women will occur, and where many people who thought they were "good enough" to enter heaven will discover that, to their shock, terror and utter despair, their good deeds on earth weren't "good enough" for a perfect God who demands perfection.
- Heaven is the final destination for anyone who was perfect during their entire lifetime on earth -- no slip-ups, no do-overs, no mistakes, no exceptions.
